![]() Women Who Live Evil Lives: Gender, Religion, and the Politics of Power in Colonial Guatemala, 1650-1750 $24.95 Women Who Live Evil Lives documents the lives and practices of mixed-race, Black, Spanish, and Maya women sorcerers, spell-casters, magical healers, and midwives in the social relations of power in Santiago de Guatemala, the capital of colonial Central America. Men and women from all sectors of society consulted them to intervene in sexual and familial relations and disputes between neighbors and rival shop owners; to counter abusive colonial officials, employers, or husbands; and in cases of inexplicable illness. Applying historical, anthropological, and gender studies analysis, Martha Few argues that women's local practices of magic, curing, and religion revealed opportunities for women's cultural authority and power in colonial Guatemala. Few draws on archival research conducted in Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain to shed new light on women's critical public roles in Santiago, the cultural and social connections between the capital city and the countryside, and the gender dynamics of power in the ethnic and cultural contestation of Spanish colonial rule in daily life. ![]() Evil Lives: A True Metal Tribute to Black Sabbath $13.98 one of the better black sabbath tributes iced earth, agent steel, dofka and some great metal allstar bands, the low point is this is not all ozzy sabbath tunes, but worth the money and time compared to the other crap out there(most of it is) ![]() Resident Evil 5 $39.99 Resident Evil 5 is another solid title in the series, although the chapter system does make it feel a little unlike the older ones. The story is great, and the fact that you can play through it co-op is a plus, there is also a ton of re-playability. The versus mode (400 MS point DLC) is decent fun, with only a few minor things that bring down the gameplay. All in all a great game. ![]() Cheerleaders: The Evil Lives (Fear Street Super Chillers, No. 13) $3.99 I enjoyed reading all R.L. Stine's cheerleader books (The First Evil, The Second Evil, The Third Evil, The New Evil, The Awakening Evil). I thought they were absolutely wonderful! So much so that they inspired me to write my own stories. However, when I read this book I was very disappointed and felt it would have been a lot better if it hadn't been written at all. (Spoilers) In "The Evil Lives" there aren't any of the old characters in it, which is a disappointment but it is to be expected, I guess. I was still hoping that Corky would appear in this book as an adult and help everyone deal with the evil... The thing that I find most idiotic about this book is how the evil comes back. Apparently Corky left a box with instructions on how to awaken the evil in a gym locker. What I'd like to know is WHY Corky would leave something so dangerous like that inside the school where anyone could find it and bring the evil back. She should have buried the box somewhere, or burned it. |
