The Face of America: Splashy Spectacle. One hundred swimmers, churning through the pool, are taking part in an event called the "salmon run." This exhibition of youthful energy serves as a warm-up for the East-West swimming meet held yearly by the College Coaches Swim Forum at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Here, during the winter holidays, more than six hundred college and high-school athletes and coaches convene for a seminar in aquatics on the eve of the competitive season. Once, as an opener for the East-West meet, the forum sponsors tried pitting the exuberant college stars against a pair of seals. But, as the story goes, the seals blithely swam two lengths to the boys' one, then couldn't be coaxed out of the pool. So now, as a prelude to the months of racing against one another in earnest, the collegians plunge into the water for this frolic.
