 Longman Dictionary of American English $35.93 This is the dictionary I always like to recommend for my students. [...]What are the strong points for the Longman Dictionary? All the definitions are very direct and easy-to-understand. The dictionary uses just 3,000 highly used English words for all the definitions. Also, this dictionary uses the IPA or International Phonetic Alphabet for the pronunciation guide for each word. The IPA is easier for most all international students to understand, compared to traditional American systems for pronunciation. Plus, I love the thesaurus that's built-in. And, the usage guide. All these features help make learning English a lot less mysterious. I really like the Longman's dictionary!  Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition (Red Kivar Binding with Jacket) $23.95 The dictionary was described as having a Kivar binding with jacket, hardcover, but it had a soft cover. I had to pay for shipping both ways. This was an irritating experience.  Pocket Oxford English Dictionary $17.95 This Dictionary has readable size print (our other one even my 10 year old couldn't read it was so small) and is HUGE but small, would be super easy to carry in your bag if you had to, We are using it as a desk reference dictionary in our home for homework. Highly recommend for grade school age kids especially who don't need tons of information, just the basics.  Webster's American English Dictionary $2.99 The dictionary arrived in an appropriate time and it's wonderful to have at the house. |
