ENDEAVOUR J-Class America's Cup Challenger Ship Model 1934 (24in) Painted Endeavour was hailed as the most beautiful J-Class yacht ever created and was the most impressive British sailboat to ever race in the America's Cup series. Built for speed as well as beauty, the Endeavour was created in 1933 by Sir Thomas Sopwith, of the British aircraft industry. Sir Thomas Sopwith challenged the America's Cup with his J-class yachts, Endeavour in 1934, and Endeavour II in 1937. Both yachts were designed by Charles E. Nicholson. Sopwith funded, organized and helmed the yachts. He did not win the Cup but he became a Cup legend by nearly winning it in 1934. He was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1995. The J-Class serves as a rating for large sailing yachts designed between 1930 and 1937. Reserved for a wealthy elite of yachtsmen, these boats were used to compete with the best sailing talents in three races of the America's Cup. Ten yachts were built to the J-Class rule between 1930 and 1937, six in America and four in Great Britain. When Endeavour returned to England she continued to dominate the British racing scene until 1938 when she was laid up for the duration of World War II. Saved by Elizabeth Meyer of New Port, RI, today she is one of the most breathtaking sights on the water.
