Just The Facts: The Election Process In America
Just The Facts: The Election Process In America

The right to vote is our single most important right as American citizens, and yet, many Americans fail to exercise this valuable right. Many feel their vote doesn t count, but this enlightening video points out why we should take the franchise, our right to vote, very seriously. Also, while reviewing the election process throughout the history of our nation, this video shows how we ve gradually expanded voting rights. There are more Constitutional Amendments dealing with elections and voting than with any other aspect of our government. Over the years Amendments have bestowed this valuable democratic right on more and more citizens. This video also explains the electoral college, and how we actually elect our government officials. It explains concepts and terms like suffrage, disfranchisement, lobbyists and political action committees, and it explores ways in which the election process might be improved, in the wake of the hotly contested Bush-Gore race for the Presidency. Also, it reviews how each of us can become more involved in the workings of our government. Several subject matter experts from Princeton, UCLA and the United States Naval Academy help explain the issues. Many American lives have been lost in wars defending our democracy, and our right to govern ourselves as we see fit. The election process is the means by which we do that.

Despite a tight narrative, Johnnie To's Election feels at times like it was once a longer picture, with many characters and plot strands abandoned or ultimately unresolved. Some of these are dealt with in the truly excellent and far superior sequel, Election 2: Harmony is a Virtue/Triad Election, but it's still a dependably enthralling thriller about a contested Triad election that bypasses the usual shootouts and explosions (though not the violence) in favor of constantly shifting alliances that can turn in the time it takes to make a phone call. It's also a film where the most ruthless character isn't always the most threatening one, as the chilling ending makes only too clear: one can imagine a lifetime of psychological counselling being necessary for all the trauma that one inflicts on one unfortunate bystander.

This was the best book ever! It did a good job of explaining the Electoral College. I liked the map of the US representing the number of Electorial votes each state has. The Winners Who Lost was informative and interesting. Order of Succession was a good reminder and learning about the nine times VP becomes president. Like the Electorial College information I liked having a complete list of all the presidents.

More than most movies I've seen, Election really captures the stupidity and pettiness of high school life. While it isn't the funniest film, it has a lot of relevant irony, from the over-ambitious resume-builder to the outcast dropout. The movie focuses on the election for student council president, and each of the three candidates represents a stereotype of each of the main types of high students: the dork, the jock, and the druggie.

The movie had funny moments (mostly with Reese Witherspoon and Chris Klein), but overall wasn't hilarious. Some of the plot elements, like Broderick's affair, seem forced. Frankly, the movie is funnier because of the parody of high school than any explicit jokes.

Also, a note for parents: this movie isn't a family movie. It's not like Legally Blonde. Several scenes include depictions of sex and vulgar language.
