I have no problem with Editors trying something new, and was excited at the prospect of them experimenting with synths. Quite frankly, I felt their first album was much better than the 2nd, which felt too "Coldplay" for me.
The problem with the new album is not that I don't like electronic music, it's just that they don't seem to know how to do it that well (probably since they never have before). The songwriting, both lyrically and musically has really taken a step backward. Also, Editors ARE good at writing guitar based music and had a very good sound...sadly, there is virtually NO guitar here. Again, this would be OK if they were masters of electronic music or had come up with some amazing songs...but they are not playing to their strengths here, as one reviewer said. The album is not a total failure...it is intriguing simply in that they are doing something unexpected, and there are a few decent tracks here. Hopefully with the next album they either ditch the electronic sound, OR get really good at it and bring some better songwriting to the studio. By all means, give this album a shot, but I have the feeling that Editors could do much better in the future, and hopefully they will.
