On this release, the Dave Holland Quintet (Chris Potter, saxophones; Robin Eubanks, trombone; Steve Nelson, vibes and marimba; Billy Kilson, drums; and Dave Holland, bass) makes music so tightly that it is almost offputting at first listen. I mean, how can anything so tight really swing? But as you listen more and more, you come to realize that these guys are swinging up a storm--they're just doing it in a really focused way. You begin to appreciate how they play with dynamics; not abruptly blasting the listener with loud passages, but rather pulling things down at times, increasing the intensity level, then bursting out with energy and joy. Five of the cuts are attributed to Holland; the other members of the group contributed one cut each.

You can tell that these musicians have played together in live sessions, because they really play as a unit, not as a collection of soloists. Trombone and vibes add an interesting sonority to the proceedings, with Holland's rock-solid but fluid bass providing propulsive energy rumbling up from below. Kilson's drumming is a real delight, energetic but never overdone. The recording is well balanced, providing the crowning touch to an impeccable production. Great stuff!
