Les Miserables the Original French Concept Album is a wonder to hear. For all of those people who love the English version of the musical play (really more pop-opera than anything else), this will be both a revelation and a disappointment. On the plus side, hearing Les Miz in French is to put it back in its proper language. It is, however, more than that:the words sound right in French, and that really increases ones sense of the emotions and action. Then there is the matter of the English translation that we are so familiar with. It is a great adaptation but it is still an adaptation. For example, what is lost in the English of "The Song of Angry Men" (A La Volonte du Peuple [For the Will of the People]) is the revolutionary language of Rousseau and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen which bring home the political nature of the text in a way that the English cannot.
On the minus side, there are some well-known numbers such as "Bring Him Home" which were added to the now standard English version that are missing here. It is a loss but one that is outweighed by the gains.
As one should expect the performances are all first rate. When I want to listen to Les Miz, this is the version I go to first.
