The American Civil War: A Military History
The American Civil War: A Military History

$35.00
Like many of the reviewers, I'm a Keegan fan, but not a Civil War expert. He delivered here as promised, offering unique insights about that inevitable American conflict from both a British and a military historian's perspective. His observations about the great European wars -- not only what American military learned from them, but what they took from the American war -- are what history students should seek from such a volume. Also, his discussion of the impact of geography and topographical features on both the grand strategy and the detailed tactics should be informative for both the occasional and serious students of the Civil War.

The more critical reviewers seem especially disturbed by minor or obvious factual errors, which admittedly should have been purged before publication. Vicksburg is pretty clearly on the Eastern bank of the Mississippi. Eisenhower is pretty clearly not Truman. There are also a number of editorial problems with repetition and chronology, which are probably more apparent to a cover-to-cover reader, than to one who uses this book as a reference tool. But those problems are less an indictment of Keegan than of the venerable Knopf publishing house, which almost looks like it has fallen on hard times with this book. However, those editorial problems should not be confused with Keegan's British, slightly indiosynctratic grammar and usage, which subtly reminded this reader that he was reading this particular history precisely for the purpose of gleaning the non-American military historian's views of this great American War. There are many other single volume or comprehensive Civil War histories which serve a different purpose -- Foote, McPherson, Pratt, and Grant's own extraordinary memoirs, to name a few -- all of which should be read. But that should not deter American readers from seeking out Keegan's unique perspective. Nor should it deter Knopf from correcting the editorial problems in the next printing.

I thought it was excellent. It gave concise explanations of what led to succession and of the war and from a refreshing Confederate viewpoint. At the end of the book, it had biographies of both Confederate and union generals. The union biographies made them sound like kind, loving, wonderful people. That was so out of place with the rest of the book. Other than the union biographies, it is an outstanding book that everyone should read. However, damnyankees wouldn't believe any of it for it would burst their yankee bubbles.

I've gotten behind on my comic book reading so I picked this up to try and help me catch up. While the story was great and alot of fun, I didnt see many of the characteristics I love from my favorite super heroes. It was also much shorter then I had anticipated. A little over half the book is just filler material and you really need to get the spin off character specific comics to get deeper into the storyline. Worth the purchase, but just barely.
