When my 5 year old daughter asked Santa for a carousel for Christmas 2007 my first reaction was 'where on earth will I find one in Bermuda?' I didn't, but Amazon had a selection from Gold Label and I chose "The Carousel"; it was perfect. When we set it up my daughter was enchanted, and so was I, and we remain so though Christmas is over. It is a beautifully made item - not really a toy, but a model, with great attention to detail. It has lights which come on automatically when available light is low. The music it plays, 15 Christmas songs and carols and 15 other songs (from American songs to classics like the Blue Danube), is pretty, provided you don't play it for too long. It runs on mains supply so you don't have to worry about batteries. It's a wonderful gift for any child (or adult!) who loves to ride on carousels.

I love this story, and the pictures, too, but what I like most is the sense of lingering influence of a Mother who taught her children with love, and the confidence her memory gives them to handle things on their own. This is skillfully done with only very subtle reference to the fact that the mother is not there, which would be very sad for the audience the book was intended for.
