Ms. Hempel Chronicles
Ms. Hempel Chronicles

This so-called novel should more properly be read as a collection of short stories (perhaps not unexpected, given the author's other works are short story collections), each relating an event in the life of Ms. Hempel, a 20-something middle school teacher. As such, there is no real plot and even a unifying theme is hard to find.

However, a prevelant theme seems to be the provocative idea of middle/high school being the last time that many of us feel "extraordinary." We get a solo in chorus ... maybe we're going to be a great singer! Our dad thinks we're the smartest kid in school ... maybe we really are! And because we believe in our own potential, it's often a time in our lives when we do amazing things. Some of the kids in these tales are indeed extraordinary, and Ms. Bynum shares their stories with rare grace and insight.

And then adulthood comes along, and many of us lose our sense of being extraordinary; and, because we no longer feel extraordinary, we give up believing we can do extraordinary things. This seems to be the fate of Ms. Hempel, whose life - as depicted in these vignettes - seems to be a search for someone (besides her father) able to understand that, somewhere beneath her rebellion, there is something extraordinary trying to burst through. The irony is that, since she is always measuring herself against the standards of society and/or the perceived potential of the children she teaches, she never does come to understand that the one thing that *does* make her extraordinary is her teaching ability.

Ms. Hempel rails against the complications of life, longing to return to a simpler place/time. Again, ironically, she never seems to learn that, like any book worth reading, life needs to be full of complications, because without complications you don't change, learn, or grow.

And that's my biggest frustration with the book. Ms. Hempel doesn't learn, and she doesn't grow. So, even though I appreciated the skill and craft that went into each one of these deftly-told tales, couldn't help feeling dissatisfied in the end. Call me ageist, but Ms. Bynum, like Ms. Hempel, is in her mid-20s, and I can't help wonder if the reason her character doesn't grow is because Ms. Bynum still has a lot of growing to do. To me, this felt like the juvenile effort of a writer who knows a great deal about literature but not a whole lot about life. Can't help but wonder what Ms. Bynum may one day be capable of, once she attains the sort of self-knowledge and wisdom that comes not from talent, but from time. The things Ms. Hempel might accomplish then ...!
No More Sheets : The Truth About Sex
No More Sheets : The Truth About Sex

Juanita Bynum is over-the-top ridiculous in "No More Sheets," especially in the masturbation section. I can't believe she insinuates that masturbating will make women believe they don't need a man. She also says unlike women, men should carry the heavy stuff into the house. And according to Juanita Bynum, she started acting "less lady-like" and started dressing unclassy when she began masturbating. How does being a woman have anything to do with dressing nicely?

This book is damaging to a woman's identity. To all the women out there: there's nothing wrong with having sexual feelings. It's normal and healthy. Please read a book on culture and sex and the different views people have of sexuality. Juanita Bynum is just stuck to the American cultural view of sex.
