The Ransom of Red Chief
The Ransom of Red Chief

$7.98
In my 8th grade English class, my students read O. Henry's "The Ransom of Red Chief," every year. The kids LOVE the story, and laugh right out loud. When I showed the video in class, they were extremely disappointed. The movie is quite different from the short story. It's a cute little movie, but it in no way compares to reading the selection orally in class. They thought the movie was fun, but they were looking for it to be much closer to the real thing. However, my kids learned a valuable lesson that made my heart SING!....The book is ALWAYS better than the movie!

As cheesy as the first Bill & Ted movie was, the sequel - Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey - was even worse. Naturally I saw it about a dozen times as a teenager. Part of the movie's charm, and what made it such a great snapshot of the early 90's pre-grunge pop culture landscape, was its soundtrack.

The soundtrack relies heavily on melodic rock and hair metal (Slaughter, Winger, Kiss, Neverland, and Richie Kotzen), which was still the dominant form of rock at the time, though it also includes entries by thrashers Megadeth and more avant garde acts like Primus, Faith No More and King's X, as well as guitar hero Steve Vai.

The hair metal songs are passable (though far from the respective artists' best work), and the guitar hero tracks have the biggest ties to the movie. It's the material from Megadeth, King's X, Primus, and Faith No More that really stands out. Hair metal, much as I love it, was getting stale in the 90's, and it was the bands that pushed the envelope that got the most attention and excitement. Megadeth's "Go to Hell" is one of their most malicious thrashers, and "The Perfect Crime" remains one of my favorite Faith No More songs. The songs from Primus, and King's X are also great examples of artists that refused to be constrained by current trends.

If you're a fan of the movie, or just want a great snapshot of the turbulent early 90's rock scene, this soundtrack is a great choice. Party on, dudes!

The first time I knew this movie existed, I found it movie in the DVD section at my local library. I never heard about it... never saw a trailer anywhere... never saw or read any reviews about it anywhere. So I borrowed it because Haley Joel Osment was in it, whom I think is a wonderful child actor. What an absolutley delightful and beautifully crafted movie this is. Others before told you of the plot. I will just say this: HOW can such a gem have been so inadequately promoted or recognized?? Why has it been kept so secret? But, like a true treasure, this film sparkels. Everything in it works so well: casting, direction, acting, music, visuals.... it is a masterpiece! This is how a movie is supposed to be made. Wonderful... simply wonderful!
