This is a really intense novel. It deals with a country that has every single person go blind within a short amount of time except for one woman. The way that Saramago describes the conditions that the people begin to live in is so realistic and believable. It really seems that it could happen and for that fact it is scary. The nature of humanity is a really strange thing. This is now one of my favorite books and it has impulsed me to start reading Jose Saramago's other works. The writing style he has is hard to get used to at first. He doesn't use quotation marks and also often uses commas in place of periods so many sentences run on quite a while. Great book though.

Not a bad book, but perhaps not as good as the 'Nobel Prize for Literature' would lead you to believe. "Blindness" is a good balance of commentary on human nature and prose. Saramago's style uses only periods and commas, blending the voice of the narrator with that of the characters. It can be a bit distracting at first, but you soon get used to it, and appreciate it as a reflection of the way the characters hear each other. A little violent, a little post-apocalyptic, it's worth buying used.

This is a hard book to read because of lack of punctuation, quotation marks and paragraph indentations. Also I really could not find a point to this entire story. Mostly it is a recording of a man's thoughts, reflections and daydreams. I felt like I wasted my time with this one. It was very BORING!
