What an amazing film!

A made-for-cable movie about the most notorious serial killer in Russian history, and the man who did everything he could to stop him. I may make it sound hokey, but it truly is an amazing film about a true life cat and mouse game.

In Soviet Russia in the early 1980s, a new forensics expert, Viktor Burakov (played by Stephen Rea), takes over and inherits quite a mess. In a bureaucracy that gets little done and disregards so much because of Soviet ideology, it is an achievement just to have a forensics expert. After a decomposing body arrives, he orders a thorough search and eight more bodies are recovered. Coupled with seven prior unsolved murders (most of children and young women), Burakov suspects a serial killer. He is immediately stopped in his pursuits to find the killer when the bureaucracy gets in the way. But he does find a friend in the seasoned manipulator Col. Fetisov (played by Donald Sutherland). And together they take on the Soviet bureaucracy and the serial killer, as Fetisov makes Burakov the head of their new "Killer Department." Later in the film, Max von Sydow joins in to help, in a small, but intense roll.

In a film with such overwhelming subject matter, there were numerous scenes of slight humor, or just endearing ideas, i.e. when Burakov says he knows because he saw it in an American movie--just a great scene with the warm sentiment that movies do teach us.

It is also an incredibly encouraging story: even with so much set against him, Burakov is able to stay with this case and see it through, never once giving up.

Some of the graphic and gory scenes of some of the murders are a bit disturbing, but they keep things to a minimum (thankfully).

It is an excellent film that shows great humanity in the face of daunting horrors. It is historical, political, and would suit people into crime dramas, police stories, and anyone interested in a good film. Incredibly acted, this film is definitely worth watching and I recommend owning it.
