![]() Under the Big Black Sun $7.98 X, the quintessential American band, really put it all together with this collection of songs. The band shows off its ease with a diversity of styles and its excellent musicianship, while still writing gripping lyrics. John and Exene's vocal harmonies are the personification of the all the great and horrible possibilities of romantic relationships. As noted previously, the writing and recording of this work was greatly affected by the death of Exene's sister in an automobile accident. If this work stands as a tribute to her, there aren't any greater tributes one can receive. ![]() Pigpile $13.98 1. Like the sound of Big Black 2. Notice a new tour in the media 3. Fail to notice "last tour" mention 4. Don't go. (Hey, I can always go next year) 5. Wait, what? 6 ........ 7. Don't profit. 8. Hear the record. 9. See the record. 10. Cry. 11. A lot. ![]() The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape $13.98 Most of Big Black's best songs are here; it's a terrific collection. If only it sounded better! The original EPs sound much better than this clipped, distorted disk. There's nothing inherently wrong with digital recording; these were just done very badly, perhaps deliberately so. With a portable digital recorder and a good turntable I was able to make much better recordings of these songs from the original disks. I have trouble believing that the world's best audio engineer, working in one of the best recording studios in the world, couldn't do better. |
