Caleum gets a job as a high school teacher at Columbine High School and Maureen a school nurse. When Quirk gets a call that his beloved aunt in Connecticut is gravely ill he makes a quick trip home to say goodbye....while there the Columbine High massacre occurs and his Maureen survives by hiding under a desk in a closet. This sets the premise for this well plotted, thought provoking read. Maureen is assaulted with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Caleum desiring healing for his wife and his own guilt moves them back to Connecticut to the family farm, hoping to leave all the ugliness of the past behind. Ah, but the past has long stretching tentacles that latch on, smothering attempts to forget; raging with nightmares, sweats, depression and panic attacks precipitated by a smell, a movement, a sound. Wally Lamb is a master at introducing slightly quirky people in adverse circumstances fighting for equilibrium in their upside down lives. From the first page to the last, I read this saga(738 page...I read the hardcover) with fervor, exasperation, anger, laughter, tears and ultimately acceptance. Caleum is our narrator and through his eyes we too search for understanding in a world full of random violence; assistance in a world full of cold shoulders; peace in a world full of chaotic unrest. Wally Lamb is in my top five list of favorite authors. I have read thousands and thousands of authors so this is saying something. I love his work because I can so easily step inside the pages and walk willingly with his characters whatever roads they take. Not many authors can instantly do that to me and I appreciate that skill so much. "The Hour I First Believed" is a masterpiece along with "I Know This Much Is True,' and "She's Come Undone." Even his anthologies of stories written by women prisoners so poignantly educate the readers to circumstances that lead to incarcerations. Bravo, Wally Lamb. I have "Wishin and Hopin" for my holiday reads and am so excited. |
