American Wife: A Novel (New York Times Notable Books)
American Wife: A Novel (New York Times Notable Books)

After reading this book, I've decided that things like the NY Times Book Review is sort of like the literary equilvalent of the Billboard Charts. It seems more and more these days, "sexy", "easy" artists are the most popular. A fiction book based on the life of Laura Bush will draw readers in much like a flashy pop video. But when you really look (or read), you realize it's not much more than a cotton candy trying to convince ou that it's good for you. I read "Prep" by Sittenfeld and enjoyed it; "The Man of My Dreams," not so much. I gave "American Wife" a chance because I too was drawn in by the luster of it all. But I was no more then 20 pages in when I realized Alice/Laura was the same character as the main characters in Prep & Man (I can't remember either of their names)--neurotic, overly focused on minute details that bogs down the narrative, obsessed with sex (seriously, were all these sex scenes necessary??) I really cannot believe how well-reviewed this book was. I guess, just like in the music world, you have to look past the fanfare to find the artists with real substance.

This book is an interesting look into how the story of Moses and the Exodus played a part in our country's progress. It could of left out the mentioning of Obama and Hillary Clinton. I think doing so, did make the book current, however, it was a mistake to do so as it left the sense of timelessness. But, I won't go into any political statements. Anyway, it is interesting to learn how the theme of Moses' and his Exodus from Egypt played a part in many of our leaders and how they viewed our nation in a similar fashion. From the proposal of the nation's seal which would've included Moses and the pillar of Fire, to the Liberty Bell and it's inscription. What was interesting is that the people of those times didn't have a model or an icon to look to when breaking away from England. Equally interesting is that they chose Moses.

If you are a history buff, you may enjoy this book. I myself enjoyed it for the interesting facts on how our nation was developed with the story of Moses and how he led the people from Egypt and into a new land. The parallel between that and our nation breaking away from England is similar.

My question is what made this country leave the model it was built upon?

Driving Nuyorican poets collection explores the ethnic experience in the U.S. In Tato Lavieras third collection, poems celebrate the array of stripes and colors making up the American people. In the beginning section, "Ethnic Tributes," Laviera crafts poems with titles like, "arab", "black," "chinese," "greek," "jamaican," "spanish," " and "mundo-world." In "Boricua," he fashions a timely plea for an end to prejudice, saying that for Puerto Ricans "... color is generally color blind/with us, thats our contribution, all/the colors are tied/to our one." The latter two sections of the collection, "Values" and "Politics" build on the themes of ethnic exchange and the place of the boriqueo in that greater scheme. In "commonwealth," Laviera writes of these tensions. "Im still in the commonwealth/stage of my life, not knowing/which ideology to select."

This book has shown me how unfair Sarah Palin and her family were treated. She is the American person that I was raised to be. I hope more Americans read this book and become anew American again. God Bless the USA.
