I am a patient reader, and it is very rare that I cannot finish a book, but this one was so mind-bendingly boring and difficult to read that I just could not get past the first third of the book. First of all, this book is formatted in a kind of pseudo diary (diarrhetic?) form that vacillates between documenting their every day happenings and the author's musings about life. As much as I want to feel moved by anyone in the story, these real-life main characters are so empty that I had a difficult time relating to them at all. Perhaps in Great Britain they are funny, boasting about how much they slack off, how much they don't know, etc., but I do not find them particularly amusing. In a word, they are losers. Anyone with half a brain will not relate to them. The writer and main character, Robin Shelton, tries way to hard to get a laugh out of the reader, and after a hundred pages or so, I found I just could not take any more of his jokes and grade school metaphors. Perhaps other readers out there will love this book, but I am sorry to say, it just was not for me. Unless you like cutesy British humor and stories about low IQ "blokes" who can't figure out the basics of gardening, steer clear of this book. |
