 The Abyss Above: Philosophy and Poetic Madness in Plato, Hlderlin, and Nietzsche $21.95 Uses the figure of the mad poet to explore the connections between madness and creativity.  Above Time: Emerson's and Thoreau's Temporal Revolutions $39.95 An exploration of the origins of the two major transcendentalists' revolutionary approaches to time, as well as to other temporally related issues such as history, memory and change. It shows that Emerson and Thoreau agreed that nature did not need time, and did not acknowledge its existence.  Above Suspicion $24.95 This was MacInnes's first thriller (and first published novel as far as I know). It was written during WW2, but it is about a spy adventure the summer prior to the invasion of Poland. A husband and wife team get recruited to check out a spy chain that has become suspect. At first things seem to be going well, but then they get identified by the Nazis and must flee for their lives. Along the way they meet an American journalist and a British student, each of whom has their own reasons for wanting to strike a blow against the Nazis. Many of the elements used in the story are typical of MacInnes's later, more polished, work. However, the story is more of an action-thriller than the romantic character-based thriller novels that MacInnes eventually became so good at writing.  The Name Above The Title $21.00 I have read many, many books on Hollywood and auto/biographies in general and this book ranks as one of the best ever. It is a very entertaining book that doubles as a great history of Hollywood through its golden age. Capra interacted with Hollywood's legends and reports in a funny, candid and emotional way his dealings with the likes of Harry Cohn, Sinatra, Disney, Monroe and many more stars of the thirties and forties. Do not think the book is dated: yes, some of the names are meaningless to us today but the perspetive and lessons contained in every single page are timeless. this book tells you better than any others how movies are made or should be made... |
