![]() Dead Before Dawn $2.99 Studio: Video Communications Inc. Release Date: 01/16/2007 Run time: 110 minutes ![]() The Bishop's Wife $8.49 What to do? You're an Episcopal Bishop who feels an angel is movin' in on your wife... and you've been overburdened trying to get a cathedral built! This is a nice 'old' classic for middle-agers and above to watch together (nothing here to keep the interest of children or teens). Fine performances by Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young. It an enjoyable movie, though I find the ice-skating sequence too long and drawn out. ![]() Purcell: Suites and Transcriptions for Harpsichord $8.99 This is a nice recording. It is well played and has some interesting pieces. The transcriptions of the overtures are from Purcell's time. I bought this cd specifically because of the transcription of the overture from "King Arthur." I love this overture and wanted to hear what it would sound like on the harpsichord. I must admit, though, that the playing is a little lackluster. There is nothing wrong with it, but it could have been made a little more interesting with some artful decorations or the use of different musical devices. As it is the playing is pretty straightforward. Use of stops, changes in register, heightening of tension are all pretty much absent. There is a certain amount of decoration and art, but not enough to really make the recording exceptional. The harpsichord is a good one with a deep bass. As for the transcriptions, I have to say that while I enjoy the transcription of the overture from "King Arthur," it is a bit thin. Still, I do overall recommend this recording as it has a number of interesting pieces and has pretty solid playing and a good sound. |
