The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems: Sleeping, Feeding, and Behavior--Beyond the Basics from Infancy Through Toddlerhood

THANK YOU, not only to Tracy Hogg but to those whose rave reviews inspired me to get this book!

At about two weeks my precious daughter stopped sleeping in her bed, and our pillow-top mattress isn't safe for co-sleeping so we had to hold her. From the day I began implementing Tracy's suggested routine - NOT schedule; it is about the order of activities, not exact times - my daughter, then two months, began sleeping in her bassinet for naps and at night. The key for me is finding the right window to swaddle, which I had not been able to do. Sometimes I have to unswaddle, do something else with my daughter, and then go back when she is more ready to settle down.

I've begun reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Mark Weissbluth, and I think that book complements Tracy's, with Mark countering some of the rigidity of Tracy's approach and I think better allowing for the individuality of one's child and parental instincts. It also has some good breast to bottle tips which I wish I'd had when my husband began giving our daughter a bottle.

Admittedly, this book was not important to me as it might be to others. My daugher is already in fourth grade and has been an avid reader since preschool. Amazingly, I found that many of the suggestions given are things we did naturally. For example, she advocates allowing the child's own interest dictate his or her reading material. My wife and I have always been avid readers and brought our daughter to the library at a young age to explore the wonders of books her own way.

Here is where I think the book is more applicable to teachers than parents. Most parents want their children to be good readers but this is far less likely to happen unless they are as well. Children emulate their parents and if reading is important to their parents, then it will probably be so for their child too.

Thus this book may be seen as a bit of a revolutionary move. It is a covert operation to get some children reading in spite of their parents. The problem is that, as the author points out, the methods are not always set up to maximize the child's potential. Perhaps this book can start a major reform.

One of several books that I bought for my daughter who trains dogs as a hobby. Ceasar gets into the pycology of the interaction of the dog and human "pack" in order for the reader to understand why a behavior is happening as well as solutions to the behaviors. my daughter loves the book(s) and I find them interesting
