Brothers Torres, The
Brothers Torres, The

$8.99
Coert Voorhees' debut novel, "The Brothers Torres," is an incredibly engaging and thoughtful work thanks to its compelling storyline and appealing and real lead character. My wife and I are in our thirties, not our teens as the protagonist and his friends, but that did not stop us from reading this book together very quickly. We loved it and it rang very true to us about the teenage years -- thought provoking both in shedding light on our own former lives as teenagers, and our children's upcoming teenage years. It is very hard to put this book down once you start reading it.

Frankie's attempts to impress his older brother, friends, and girls, and make his way through the high school years with both integrity and satisfaction, are incredibly endearing. The language is colorful and funny. Frankie's casual and sincere confessions to the reader (it is written in first person) and his awestruck love of a girl named Rebecca are a delight. The relationships between parents and the kids are fascinating, varied, and realistic -- perfectly illustrating the lives of people at different stages of life who are all generally trying to do the right thing, but who simply don't quite fall in step with each other. It's too bad we all didn't keep as delightful a diary as this one when we were growing up.

Voorhees handles race relations in a very honest way, but is not heavy handed or preachy about it all -- quite a feat. The same can be said of his handling of the relationships of people in different socio-economic groups. I particularly like the empathy he has for his characters -- even the characters doing the wrong thing are generally portrayed as people making the wrong choices in a challenging world, not black and white evildoers.

The book is great on its own; still, I hope it's made into a movie someday. It would be wonderful to see a funny, real, hip and intelligent story about teenagers made into a film. This tale, and its characters, are just as compelling as the typical teenage bubble gum movie, but much, much smarter. I hope somebody can get this book into Hollywood's hands.

I have no doubt readers of any age will enjoy this book and get something out of it. My wife and I both look forward very much to his next novel.

I've been collecting Halloween props avidly for about five years and Jason is by far my most impressive. It is so realistic that party guests think it is a friend of ours dressed up. The eyes are disturbing and the sound effects coordinate beautifully with his arm movements and the swooshing of the blade. The "Ch..Ch..Ch.. Ahh..Ahh...Ahh.." sound is compelling and eerie. (I usually turn off our noisy props due to their repetitive, annoying sounds.) Many of our guests just sit in the room and stare. Very impressive and helpful is the way it collapses to half its size for convenient storage. This is a great prop for scare effect without including the cheesiness of gore. I'm surprised the price isn't closer to $500.00.

This massive figure of the new image of Jason Voorhees as portrayed by Derek Mears is dead on. It looks fantastic, is excellently sculpted, and appears identical to the character in Friday the 13th. Comes well packaged in a large box with clear plastic window. It comes with two replaceable heads, the early Sackhead and then the hockey mask wearing head. On the second head, you can remove the mask for the disfigured visage of Jason himself. Elbow articulation is rather useless (pivots but doesn't bend), wrists fully rotate but no movement in the waist or legs. Nonetheless, it's just amazing to look at and will top off you Jason display.
