Like the rest of the kids who live along this school-bus route out of Twin Falls, Idaho, the six school-age Hollon children pile off at their stop and head happily for home. Unlike the rest, the Hollons step over the edge of a 500-foot precipice and, by ladders and cable rails, descend to the nearly inaccessible floor of this gorge of the Snake River, because that is where home is. John Hollon fell in love with this spectacular canyon years ago and bought seventy acres of its rich alluvial soil from the Federal Government. There he raises fruit and vegetables, which he ships downriver to market. There he and his wife, Hazel, made their home and brought up eleven children. Hazel made it up and out of the canyon to the Twin Falls Hospital for each delivery - on the most recent occasion, in 1955, with only two hours to spare. In their little private empire the Hollons live a happier life than most conventional householders. Privacy more than compensates for the abscence of many conveniences, including electricity. The children have one another for company and a colorful wilderness in which to fish, hunt and explore. As for television, who needs it when you live in an enchanted canyon.
