 Vacas $19.95 A beautiful bucolic/violent film, where two families, much akin to dysfunctional ones such as the Hatfields & the McCoys, as in the feud/competition between the two families through generations of men into chopping logs as a competitive sport; the haunting of the cows on the patriarch, cowardly, maybe, smart, possibly more so. Traumatized by the carnage amongst his paisanos, he feigns death and escapes, though not unscathed (psychologically) as a cow bears witness to his (transgressive) act and this propels him to pay (continuous) tribute to its kind, until the end of his days. The love story was, while expected, handled nicely.I'd have given this film five stars, but for the poor quality of such a luscious, beautiful film, not found on the dvd, but experiened at the screening when I first saw it at the MFA in Boston.  Star Trek: Titan: Over a Torrent Sea $7.99 Star Trek: Titan: Over a Torrent Sea is a science-fiction novel. The science is good. The fiction...well.... Christopher L. Bennett loves to explain. Details, details, details. His stories always make sense, logically flow, and are as "realistic" as Trek fiction goes. Depending on how interested you are in marine life, you'll end up learning a lot, or skimming through paragraphs of scientific elucidation. As for the actual story of the book, it's not all that great. Titan flies off and encounters a water-planet with an remarkable aquatic species. Trouble arises when an asteroid approaches planet Droplet, and a side story develops around Deanna Troi's pregnancy and a crazed Doctor Ree. There was never a true sense of danger or excitement. Character development seemed to be driven by relationship tensions and sexual drama, which was alright at first, but just got tacky and wearisome towards the end. The only moral dilemma was the cliched 'how to interpret the Prime Directive.' Some of the dialogue was a bit cheesy. Although we get to learn more about the historical background of Ensign Aili Lavena and her people, I feel that everyone else played a backup role in this book. Overall, the plot was not very interesting. This is only an average installment to the Titan series. The writing wasn't downright bad, but I'm not picking up this book for a re-read anytime soon. Here were the major reasons helped me make up my mind. 1.Inexpensive. 2.Support rmvb format files. 3.Support .iso DVD menu with button on remote. 4.Support online update. 5.BitTorrent download support...you know what I am talking about... After I got my toy, 1.Remote is amazing! Quick response! Very user friendly. 2.UPnP function works well. No problem plays video from my Playon app. 3.Smooth PC connecting. 4.I have tried to play rmvb, avi, and DVD image file without any problem. 5.Fantastic image and sound quality, totally worth it!! 6.The last and the most important one for me, fast and stable BT downloading!! (I have AT&T 6MB DSL) By the way, I did contact customer service to ask a couple technical questions, and they responded nicely and quickly. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with my new toy, and surprisingly, even my mom knows how to use that!! |
