 Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems $231.95 I agree that there are a lot of mechanics books and very few good ones. I own almost every classical mechanics book in print. Thornton/Marion and Goldstein (at a more advanced level) are still my favorites. I am a little puzzled by all the negative reviews. It reminds me of my college days. Some of my favorite physics profs were hated by the majority of students because they refused to hold the students hands. Taylor seems to be popular, but Thornton has more depth and if you struggle through it you will have a deeper understanding of the physics. Taylor is more superficial in my opinion. The book is not without its flaws. The problem sets are weak. But I don't know of any really outstanding mechanics books at this level. Thornton is one of the better ones, which, in spite of what the detractors say, is why it is used at a lot of universities. The book however is way overpriced. The binding isn't that good and the paper is thin and cheap. But the content isn't nearly as bad as soon of the emotional negative reviewers suggets. Four stars is appropriate but I'll give it five just to add a little balance to the force :-)  Hound Dog: The Peacock Recordings $11.98 Big Mama Thornton was the artist who basically continued Bessie Smith tradition of sassy black blues queens in new r&b idiom and her growling vocals suggested woman who won't take any nonsense from anybody.She was the one who recorded "Hound dog" and "Ball and chain" long before Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin,and was bitter that others had big hits with what were her originals but in my opinion that connection didn't hurt her a bit as kids all over the world eventually came to hear originals anyway - on cover of "Cheap Thrills" LP artist Robert Crumb had carefuly noted her name so it's not like people didn't know who she was. This compilation cover her most glorious years - it's all a fine line between blues and early r&b - it might be one-dimensional as Thornton growls one song after another without any break in let's-have-a-ball mood,clearly she was not the one for introspection. Legendary Johnny Ace turned out as a guest on "Yes,baby" and there is some very fine guitar playing all through.
