Once the process was introduced in America, the "e" was added to aid pronunciation. A Photochrom is a color photo lithograph, produced from a black-and-white negative. The final prints were created using different color impressions from multiple lithographic stones. The stones used by the publisher Detroit Photographic Company were imported from Bavaria and coated with a special Syrian 'asphaltum' substance that would be chemically sensitized to light, put in contact with a photographic negative, exposed to the sun for up to several hours, then "developed" in oils of turpentine. A separate stone would be made for each color to be used. A minimum of four stones and as many as fourteen stones might be used for a given image. But who that has made such examination has not felt a measure of keen disappointment at the result ? Minute inspection discloses numberless deficiencies in the character of those whose path seems most marked with brightness. Wordliness, impetuosity, and sometimes bitterness and pride, have tinged deeply the words and the ways of those who have been ready to submit unhesitatingly to torment or to death. Many whose devotedness has been extended through a lengthened series of years?who have received much discipline and been subjected to countless sorrows, have nevertheless betrayed again and again thoughts little brought into harmony with those of Christ. Sell- will and independency of spirit have ofttimes swayed their course ; ignorance perhaps of Scripture has led them to despise truth and justify evil; or else, their proud minds, refusing to bow to the simplicity of revealed truth, have, (to use the words of the Apostle,) "replied against God." Every thought has not been brought into captivity to the mind of Christ. There has however been One, whose unreserved devotedness, perfect as it was in life and in death, has been equalled by the perfectness of His character even in its minutest traits. Indeed, no perfectness of devotedness can exist where perfectness of character is wanting.
