Her diction is usually better in Lucia than in other operas and it is surprisingly better here than in 1961 where I thought it wasn't so bad but it is horrid compared to this performance. In 1959 she has as good a diction as anyone but the performance is subdued. Neither Milnes nor Pavarotti bring anything special to the roles of Edgardo and Enrico, though their Act III duo might be the best on record. Both sing well enough but when you see their names on the label you expect more than "well enough". Many will love them both but in my opinion Cioni and Merrill were better (1961) and Pav and Milnes have collaborated superbly elsewhere in Puccini and Verdi both live and in studio. Raimondo is sung as well by Ghiaurov as by anyone including Siepi. Another reviewer nicely criticised Bonynge's conducting. It was metronomical at best, ridiculously fast at worst. I have criticised Sir John Pritchard's erratic conducting of the 1961 studio version and I have gotten on Bonynge's case but, like Pavarotti and Milnes, I expected more from Bonynge when it came to Lucia. The bonus disc: The beauty of this set is it affords the listener to hear Joan at three very distinct time periods within her signature role. First there is a set of arias and the Mad Scene conducted by Santi in recital, 1959. Here her voice it at its greatest beauty but she also sounds subdued. As if she is uncomfortable and is holding back. Next are the Pritchard arias and Mad Scene from the complete Decca studio recording of the opera in 1961. Sutherland is at her strongest here and comfortable in the role but her diction is completely horrid compared to two years earlier that it is surprising all three are the same woman. It's so bad that I had to change discs and play the same arias to make sure Decca didn't change things. My take is that these arias sound much better when taken in the context of the complete opera which is superior to the 1971 overall. ![]() White Collar Crime: The Uncut Version $34.00 This classic study of corporate crime in America is now available for the first time the way Sutherland originally wrote it -- with names and case studies of offenders included. ![]() Cpl Cooper "Whammer" Sutherland, 1/18 scale Action Figure $8.95 Cpl "Whammer" Sutherland comes with two sets of extra, interchangeable arms, an extra, interchangeable head, carbine with stock folded and overcoat. |
