even ALLMUSIC won't break down enough for you why this is such a terrific disc . well , first of all , it's JIM HALL . if i have to tell you about him you're not here . the real revelation on this particular disc is a very youthful (23) year old LARRY GOLDINGS . he's fully developed and really confident and "dealing" to borrow a word PAT METHENY used to characterize GIL GOLDSTIEN in the liner notes to a solo album of GIL'S . in addition to the incredible JIM and LARRY , you've got JIM'S frequent collaborators in the excellent STEVE LA SPINA (acoustic bass) and TERRY CLARKE on drums . this is an exceptional rhythm section if you're familiar with jazz at all . and true musical soul mates to JIM . guesting on a couple songs on side A. are young danish saxaphone player RASMUS LEE making his debut . he turns up again on a song on side B. he gets a couple really good opportunities to be featured and makes the most of them . LARRY plays organ on both side A. tracks with RASMUS . piano on the side B. tune . another guest on a track or two is the extrordinary TOOTS THIELMANS (on harmonica) playing with JIM for the first time on this recording . everyone gets ample opportunity to strech out and really express themselves and support the brilliant leader . JIM and his wife (for one selection) write all the music on side A. (i have the cassette) . LARRY and TOOTS contribute a song each on side B. the two remaining songs on side B. are the standards "I'M IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE" to open the second half of the session and "MORE THAN YOU KNOW" to round it out . there are better jazz projects out there . this intimate , constantly rewarding , occassionaly gently abstract set is a winner . more so for some than others . but it's a delight . how can you miss with JIM and company ? you can't . it harkens back to solid dates from the fifties and early sixties in sensibility .
