 The Original Jacket Collection: Leonard Bernstein $99.98 If asked, one would be hard pressed to come up with better choices to better represant Bernstein's legacy of recordings for Columbia - interpretations that better represented his art as a conductor. And in the case of one disc in this collection, as a composer as well. This limited edition set - often selling used for under $50 here on amazon is hard to beat. Beautifully remastered, with a thrilling, legendary performance of Sacre du Printemps (that alone often sells for more than this entire set) - it presents a great Lenny NYP career retrospective. If your taste is whetted by the set, I suggest you explore the Bernstein Royal Edition series as well as the Bernstein Century series, both released by Sony. My one cavil is with amazon's own description of the discs contained in the set, which incorrectly lists Bernstein's performance of Mahler's 5th symphony. It is, in fact, Bernstein's classic account of the 7th symphony, which is also pictured on the cover of this box set. While Mahler's 5th is generally regarded as one of Bernstein's lesser performances from the 1960s cycle, the performance of the 7th included here is rightfully regarded as being top-drawer, if not classic, Mahler. Now about that Sacre. Stravinsky's own succinct response to hearing the performance: "Wow!" I couldn't agree more! |
