![]() Scott Joplin: His Complete Works $18.98 It's necessary for me to refresh every time. I'm addicted to it. What a great person, Scott Joplin! What a terrific person, Joseph Lamb! ![]() Joplin: Piano Rags $6.98 Roy Eaton plays these pieces with much style and generally much vigor. Though often times the approach reminds one of recorded performances of Chopin waltzes or mazurkas, the beat is never lost: Eaton is faithful to the spirit of ragtime. The works present on this disc are perceptively chosen. I believe this is enough ragtime to satisfy most anyone. Joplin occasionally hearkens back to earlier American composers such as Louis Moreau Gottschalk (particularly in The Chrysanthemum). Aside from the famed Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer, other works give equal pleasure, such as Original Rags, The Search-Light Rag and Solace (A Mexican Serenade that can be called nothing other than truly American). These Joplin Rags are enjoyable from any perspective. After dipping into this set or one like it, I recommend looking into older American composers such as Gottschalk. ![]() Joplin - Complete Rags for Piano (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics) Vol. 2020 $16.95 If there is anyone that captures the rich musical influence of the African American heritage integrated in American society, there are two names that shine above the rest: Ray Charles and Scot Joplin. The rags in this book are both familiar and fun. "The Entertainer" is very well known, and the book offers the original full-length version - a true entertainment for the ragtime lover. "The Maple Leaf Rag" was among Scot's first hits, and remains timeless. I've been playing piano for ten years, have earned a diploma, and today play for my church. And though there are musical joys in Chopin, Beethoven, or Bach, none compares for a good time like Joplin. ![]() King of Ragtime: Scott Joplin and His Era $42.00 The reason I purchased this book was for my Jazz history class presentation on the 'King of Ragtime'. I could not find any recorded live performances by the classical ragtime composer because talking movies were not invented until 1920's long after his death in 1917. This book is just as good as recorded interviews from people who knew him as a friend, a composer, a performer, and a teacher. My teacher complimented me on my presentation for the interesting and valuable information I have shared with the class. This book contains speculations and contradicting facts about the composer. The author did a very diligent research on Joplin's life. It is an excellent book. |
