After years and years of countless "greatest hits" compilations which contained basically the same material over and over they have finally released a Lucho Gatica product we can all sink our teeth in! This generous 3-CD collection with a DVD of television performances is a proper career retrospective for Latin America's greatest crooner. Of course it includes Lucho's unforgettable boleros like El Reloj, La Barca, Contigo en la Distancia, Somos, Encadenados, Sabra Dios, etc. all of which made it to the number one spot in hit parades worldwide and eventually became the quintessential Spanish-language romantic songbook from which everybody, from Nat "King" Cole to Sarita Montiel to Julio Iglesias to Luis Miguel have borrowed through the years. Besides that hunk of Latin music history, this collection gives us many other Gatica standards that were never included in previous compilations such as Regalame Esta Noche, Escribeme, Lagrimas Del Alma, Yo Tengo Un Pecado Nuevo, Amor Que Malo Eres, La Noche De Mi Amor and many others. I assure you that there isn't a bad cut in the whole package plus there are many welcome surprises like the four songs Lucho recorded for Capitol in English backed by the magnificent Nelson Riddle and his orchestra. Other highlights are selections from Lucho's classic Agustin Lara album, a few from his famous tango LP as wells as some Chilean and South America folk songs to remind us of the singer`s roots; but I almost fell off my seat when I listened to a previously unreleased version of the poignant Nadie Me Ama with different arrangement and lyrics both in Spanish and Portuguese, truly a rare treat. Of course, the icing in the cake is the DVD with those vintage television performances that enable us to see the magic of Lucho's interpretation. In short this is a collection that should be owned not only by the many fans of the celebrated vocalist but by anybody who appreciates Latin America romantic tunes.
