Rostropovich
 Dvork: Cello Concerto / Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme $9.49 Not only is this not the best Rostropovich version (try the ones with Boult or Khaikin) but it is not nearly as good as some more recent versions, such as Jean-Guilhen Queyras on Harmondia Mundi (with perfect balance between soloist and orchestra and a deeply poetic and powerful interpretation)or Hoelscher with Keilberth on Warner/Teldec (wonderfully executed). There is of course the classic version by Fournier with Szell and Casals with Szell. If you must have Rostropovich, get the Khaikin version with those wonderfully fruity Russian horns: he sounds so much better there than with Karajan whose orchestra is just overblown.  Bach - Cello Suites / Rostropovich $37.98 Purchased the CDs when they were released----and they remained in my stereo for at least six months. Rostropovich's interpretation is simply beyond words...so imagine my surprise over 10 years later, taking cello lessons. My cello teacher loaned me a couple of cello DVDs---we wondered aloud if Rostropovich filmed his monumental recording. It would be understatement in the extreme to say how delighted I was when I found he did. These DVDs are even better than the CD recordings, for the artist described each piece in detail. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!  Bach: Cello Suites Nos. 1-6 $32.98 As a music student, I am overjoyed to have such wonderful renditions of Bach's Cello Suites in my possession. The liner notes about the Magdalena scores read by Rostropovich and his interpretation of each suite and movement is fabulous.  Schubert, Debussy / Rostropovich, Britten $11.98 This is an exceptional recording offering Britton and Rastopovich with all the dynamics of two great music people. |
