While I personally think Jonathan's analysis of the characters is a little over the top there are a few comments that are dead-on.
This series is my first exposure to Dekker. I enjoyed "Chosen" and "Infidel" and could hardly wait to get to "Renegade." With 10 chapters left I am considering moving on to other, more promising, works. I am shocked that other readers are giving this book high marks and calling it "Dekker's best so far."
I can only imagine that the white room is lifted from another series that I have not read. It is out of context in this book and puts the characters in situations where they behave in a manner inconsistent with their personalities. The idea that so much paper was wasted on Billos believing the machine was a "spider" and virtually nothing on the concept of Darsal, Karas, and Papa strapping themselves into "DELL", illustrates Dekker's desire to get to what he wants to accomplish in this book at the expense of meeting the reader's needs. Even "Papa" would understand that.
There is a possibility that the shortcomings of the first 28 chapters will somehow be reversed by the end of this book; but, that can't propel this to "Dekker's best so far." When looking at all 6 books side by side, you wonder if the desire to make them the same width didn't result in necessary pages being left out.

The opening pages of this book have modern-day criminals searching for dirty cop Trace Sheridan. Once past those few pages, the book never returns to modern-day. This is where the real story begins.

Imagine going back in time to escape a certain death. Imagine also landing in just the right place and time to rescue a beautiful woman who desperately needs your help. You have just imagined the life of Trace Sheridan. She lands in the proverbial backyard of Rachel Young. Rachel lives on her family's ranch and is struggling to keep it vital. Her family is all dead, local villains - the Cranes - have killed her cattle and horses, one of these men - Ben Crane - raped her and slandered her name around town. She reluctantly welcomes Trace into her home and agrees to keep the secret that she is a woman. Ultimately, Trace plans to use her modern-day police tactics to bring down the Cranes. However, she needs the help and trust of the townsfolk to be ultimately successful. In the meantime, Rachel develops feelings for her enigmatic savior and comes to terms with what those feelings really mean.

Bottom Line - This is a very good first book and I'd willingly read something else from this author.

Good rock song just hope they catch Osama bin laden one day as this would make a great theme song for the news report on his capture.

Because of a 5 star review by someone I often agree with, I bought this book with high hopes. They were dashed by an awkward writing style (hey, a comma now and then would help) and a complete lack of proofreading by the publishing house. The book read more like a first submission than a finished manuscript. I hesitate to give a 1 star review to a debut author, when writing can be such a difficult task, but every typo yanked me out of the story and into a grumpy former-English-teacher frame of mind. Perhaps Miss Parr has talent; based on this book, I couldn't tell.
