Practical Programming for Strength Training
Practical Programming for Strength Training

$21.95
I only wish that this book and Starting Strength by the same authors, had been available when I was in HS 30 years ago. Forget all other so called weight-training, bodybuilding, fitness craze books. This is the one to have if you are looking for workouts that make sense and work! I look forward to using the information to help train my kids for football and other sports.

This is the book I started with to get into iPhone development. Even though this book is specific to Mac OS X desktop software development, it's by far the best book to get a solid foundation in Cocoa and Objective-C before learning the specifics in the iPhone SDK.

It took me about 80 hours to get through this book, doing all of the example programs. After that, it felt like I had taken a 5 credit course in college. This will teach you Xcode, Interface Builder, Cocoa, and Objective-C. Almost all the people at my last company that got into iPhone development said that this is *the* book to start with to get started, and I agree. Hillegass actually teaches a Cocoa class, and you can tell he is a great teacher from reading the book. You'll feel like you accomplished something cool after each chapter.

Before starting with the book, I already knew several other languages in-depth, notably Java, Perl, and some C. It may be a little too advanced for those without solid programming experience, and Objective-C looks very foreign to those who haven't used it before, but it's really not once you get used to it.

Programming Interviews Exposed: Secrets to Landing Your Next Job, 2nd Edition (Programmer to Programmer)

This book would be good if you were interviewing for an entry-level C programming job 20 years ago. However, todays programming world has: Object Oriented programming, database integration, SQL, the Internet, shell scripting langauges, and software life cycle development, NONE of which are covered in this book. This doesn't even mention the classics, like joining a database table to another enstantiation of itself, spot the memory leak, or recurrsion. How did these morons ever got a job in software? I would not hire them based on the content of this sadly laking text. They also forgot the essential element of getting a programming job today: be on an H1B visa, speak little Engilsh, work cheap, and re-write your resume to parallel the job description regadless of whether you have the actual experience asked for.

I'm not really a fan of Mr Walenbach in general. For example whilst reading his previous 2003 VBA book there is a smell of arrogance with his off the cuff remark of:
'Using the task pane to display help topics is new to Excel 2003.The Help information appears in a separate window. This means, of course, that using Help now requires two windows. My opinion is that the person who thought of this "new" method should be fired.'

I'm not in the habbit of condemming people for their work and personally frown upon such things. I've come across a lot worse than that idea in my travels.... Maybe the author should concentrate soley on the book content we can benefit from.

Anyway, that been said, the actual content of that book was excellent and imo well worth the cost.
This book stands side by side with the earlier version in terms of quality. I prefer the layout of this new book as well.
Its compact with good tips and gotchas. Some of the information is repeated, but I think you have to expect that tbh.

Its all easily digestable and not hard to follow.
Definitely worth a purchase if you are a serious VBA developer or need a strong reference book.
