 Philadelphia: City of Music $16.95 Photos of stars, hardly any content, and what was included was badly written. Interviews of dancers on Bandstand are of little interest. If you're a serious student of the music, avoid; if you're not, still avoid.  A House on Fire: The Rise and Fall of Philadelphia Soul $50.00 The book was good. Had alot of unanswered questions for me as to what happened between the musical lines at Sigma Sound Studios. Like who actually were singing background besides Linda Creed, Carla, Barbara and Yvette, staff writers doing the filler-songs, Gamble and Huff getting all the producing credits off of other songwriter's creation, i.e. on "For The Love Of Money", then Gamble-Huff finishing it up, or passing on the song lead sheets to the arrangers like Martin, Bell or Jack Faith, who actually wrote, conducted and arranged those songs for Gamble and Huff. Oh well. Not nearly the over-top-drama over at Motown, but the book actually tells that everything was not as smooth as Joe Tarsia's recording engineered masterings. Kenny Gamble was a big control freak. But I finally did get to figure out how the real Philly Sound came about with Thom Bell (my favorite Philly producer), being the actual creator of it all, following Harris-Baker-Young, Vince Montana, Bobby Eli and Dexter Wansel along with him. Gamble and Huff just brought all these guys together, stuck together and came up with something with a nice beat and easy to dance to. In the end Gamble-Huff-Bell got paid big time for making musical history in Philly. Great music! Good writing!  The Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 3 - WOGL 98.1 Philadelphia $16.97 I purchased this CD because of the Christmas vacation song by Mavis Staples. This is the theme song to my favorite christmas movie with the same title with Chevy Chase. The rest of the album is O.K....wish the CD case had not arrived cracked...I had to pry out the CD and the case is ruined. The CD, though, played Christmas vacation perfectly and I was able to transfer to my IPOD for my christmas party mix! |
