Fall On Your Knees (Oprah's Book Club)
Fall On Your Knees (Oprah's Book Club)

$16.00
I got this book on clearance and decided to take a chance, since it was an Oprah recommended book. Bad choice. I likely won't read anything from this author again.

If I had to describe this book, it's kind of like watching a train wreck you can't turn your eyes from. And just when you think it can't get any worse or the story is resolving itself, something else crazier happens in the plot line. This family has to be the most disfunctional family ever. And I didn't feel like I learned anything from it, so I can only surmise it was for shock value.

I didn't only dislike it from the crazy plot premise, but also from the writing style. Most of the book is like reading a narration from an unemotional observer. You want to drop your jaw at some of the crazier parts, but it's like the author is just listing events over time, completely detached. Almost bored. The only spirited part is from the diary readings at the end.

Overall, the whole thing was just bizarre. I only gave it two stars rather than one because I did actually finish reading it.

Tara Road is a must read for women who have faced the challenges of putting others before themself throughout their life. I found myself reflecting back some 40 years of my life and how I had so many things in common with all the women in the book.

When I first started to read this book I could not put it down. The first half of the book was compeling. As the plot thickened I could not quite figure out how it could end in a sensible manner. Does Nicole get her house back? Does Colonel Behrani do the right thing or does his pride and ego interfere with his decision making and how about Lester, does he leave his wife and children? All these plots seemed intriguing and then the second half of the book is very disappointing. Its like the auther did not know how to end it so it goes crazy! Also, my lungs ached with every cigarette Nicole lite up. Was it necessary for her to do that constantly? I go the message in the beginning she was a chain smoker. Anyway, I was really disappointed in the ending. I was looking forward to a clever conclusion to a tangled mess. They either ended up dead or in jail. How convienient.

I do not think this book will appeal to the younger crowd. I read this book in high school and absolutely disliked it. I'm now 23 and still rate this as the least interesting novel I have read to date. There is nothing to learn from this book. If you like to read books for learning purposes, as I do, then you will likely not enjoy this book.
