![]() Observatorio $25.98 I am finding that in my middle years, most of my early "heroes" of Msica Popular Brasileira are turning out disappointing recordings more often than the works of art of days passed achievments. While I still wait for the next release from Milton, Gil, Veloso, Bosco, Djavan et al, they are treading on old and familiar territory, with only occasional exception these days! Managgia la misera ! Enter Andr Vasconcelos, in this instance! The current musics from the new young lions, based mostly in Sampa has been very refreshing and enjoyable to listen, selo Trama (record label) is in the vanguard of this wonderful new fase of Brasilian cultural cannibalization (the well documented Brasilian badge of honour!),but this glorious fresh approach reveals itself in ALL Brasil! (Simoninha ,Max de Castro, Jairzinho, Barbara Marx, and , most of all, Ed Motta as example) A second note, Andr Vasconcelos is another of the virtuosi bassmen of Brasil, something that goes quite unnoticed is how many unique and innovative electric and contrabaixistas that Brasil has, and continues to produce. (can you believe, TOO many to name!) What makes this recording a revelation, is that it is NOT just for the musician "bassmen" to enjoy and learn "chops" from, but very listenable and well rounded recording for all. Bass is out in front, stating the melody, and Andr V. demonstrates a remarkable ability to show his technical skills within the confines of each solo, he does not "show out" , but his technique only enhances his flavourful lyricisms. Bassmen can get a bit tedious with technical display of virtuosity at times unfortunately, but NOT the case here. Heavy funk/dub/ bass n'drums cannot obscure the Brasilidade here, "nem um talvez"! And the "decomposing" in the tribute to Tom Jobim, ("Angela") will demonstrate that respect and regard for tradition (of Brasilian musics) mixing with the current "modern" concepts avaliable to all in the globalized world . The "craque" team of sidemen musicians are well versed in the jazz language, and solo passages from all at the highest caliber. New musics that impress even these "old" ears, this recording is not to be missed. Viva o som sempre! |
