Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion

i can't believe this game is for a modern console. i played better games than this on the NES. Terrible graphics. You spend a good bit of time trying to figure out how to basic things. i rated this game a 1-star because you cannot give negative stars. Aah. i am so angy for buying this stupid game. my time would have been better spent watching paint dry. at least i could hallucinate liking this game as the paint fumes overtake me.

I've long been a fan of tabletop and computer roleplaying game, but this was the first of the Elder Scrolls series of games that I had played. It was a fairly fun game, but had some definite flaws that if worked out could have made it much better.

The Good:
The graphics - The graphics in this game are simply beautiful. Especially if you have the computing power to run them near top settings.
The freedom - The freeform nature of the game is nicely done, and a lot of the sidequests are fun and interesting.

The Bad:
The Main Storyline - Unfortunately this seems to be a flaw in many freeform rpg games. Lots of development effort is spent on all the sidequests, and the main quest suffers because of it. The main storyline in this game was fairly short, and not all that interesting.
The Ending - The ending of the game was not good at all. It was a huge deus-ex-machina (your character simply gets to watch as the climax takes place) and was quite a letdown.

The Ugly:
The leveling/difficulty system - The leveling and difficulty system in this game is very confusing and counter-intuitive. A character's power level is not tied directly to his character level, and it's easy to make a character that levels very quickly, but remains quite weak throughout the game (in fact, making logical choices when creating the character will almost certainly lead to this). The difficulty of the enemies you face does scale directly with your character level though. When you add the two together, it means that it's very easy to make a character that will get in over his head as you level him up. People who are already familiar with the game system won't have the problem, but those who are new to it might find it incredibly frustrating (I did).

So in summary, it's a fairly fun game, but it's got some major flaws too. If you can get a copy cheaply enough, it might be worth picking up, otherwise, I'd probably stay away.

This game is a few years old now, but is still one of the best RPG's out there. With the game of the year addition, playing it for the first time you will not be disappointed. The scenery is still among the best out there with individual detailing down to individual blades of grass. The weapons show pockmarks if they're old, the water looks incredible, and the spells are well done. The only thing that I can find as a negative in this game is in the beginning, the distances you have to travel can be a little frustrating, you might spend 3 of your first 5 hours just walking some where if you haven't played before. The story lines are amazing, especially the main story. I love that as you level, the NPC's and foes increase in difficulty accordingly.
If you are into mythical RPG's, you will absolutely love this game. And at less than $30, you can't go wrong even if you didn't like it. 5 stars through and through

Oblivion has been in market circulation for a couple of years now however for those of you who are new to RPGs or the Elder Scrolls series then this addon to Oblivion is great in the sense that it adds additional items, areas & quests to an already huge gaming world.

The addon is actually several different modules allowing you to skip installation of modules that are not to your playing style, for example you wouldnt want a vampire den if your a crusading knight although this does add some role playing options an example of this would be what terrible secret does your holy knight harbor for him to own a vampire den!??.

Make sure you do install the latest patch for this game followed by the unofficial official mods community patch to make Oblivion as smooth and bug free as possible. This addon pack for the sale price is now reasonable as it is a bit short although many of the modules add to the existing gaming world (so changes are not so apparent and dramatic).

Ensure if your purchasing this along with Oblivion that you have a computer that is at least a 2.8GHZ single core Pentium 4 (or 2.2GHZ dual core) CPU with 256mb (Nvidia 6600GT/6800 or ATI equivalent) video ram & 2GB ram to smoothly run this game that continues to set the standards for RPGs.
