![]() McCANN'S Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal, 28-Ounce Tins (Pack of 4) $30.08 I've read many places and heard Dr. Oz say that the only oatmeal that really has the health benefits is steel cut oats. I just love this stuff. I make a large amount and eat it cold all week. I use 8 cups of water, 1/2 cup non-fat dry milk, mix it, bring to a boil, and then dump in 2 cups of the oats. Stand by the pot and keep stirring so it doesn't overflow the pot or stick to the bottom. I love the flavor and the sort of crunch. It would also be good with dried cranberries and some walnuts or slivered almonds. It's a few pennies cheaper at Trader Joe but they don't always have it. I've been eating it every day and thoroughly love it. ![]() Quaker Oats - 2/4.5 lb. bags $19.95 These are not rolled oats, but the quick kind to make a creamy bowl of "mush." They are versatile and great for cooking (like meatloaf or breads and muffins.) But if you remember a rolled, hearty oat mush from your childhood, you want a thick cut oat. My mom used to fry the leftover rolled oats and serve with butter and syrup. (Yummy on a cold morning!) Amazon carries a very good thick oat called "Mothers." See: Mother's Rolled Oats, 16-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12) We like these Mothers Oats because they cook up without getting gummy. ![]() Bob's Red Mill Organic Scottish Oatmeal, 20-Ounce Units (Pack of 4) $17.04 I really like this oatmeal! I usually buy the steel cut oatmeal, but this is crushed instead of cut (so it is still whole grain & unprocessed) and I like the texture better. It is more of a malt-o-meal style . Another plus is it only takes 10 minutes to cook, and you can make a double batch and keep it in the fridge to just heat up during the week when you want a bowl. ![]() Nature's Path Organic Instant Hot Oatmeal, Variety Pack of Four Flavors, 8-Count Box (Pack of 6) $24.00 When we learned that Costco had discontinued their Organic Instant Oats, we were faced with searching the net for an acceptable substitute. Since Costco carries other Nature's Path cereal products and comparing the general overall description, we incorrectly surmised that these might be the same or very close to the same. No such luck. They are good but not great and the portions are smaller. I suppose they will have to be an acceptable substitute for now but hopefully Costco will bring back their product and soon. |
