Nicole Mitchell's "Renegades" is an earthy follow-up to 2007's "Black Unstoppable" (there was also 2008's "Xenogenesis Suite", which I haven't heard). The band has Renee Baker on violin, Tomeka Reid playing cello, Josh Abrams is the bassist, and Shirazette Tinnin plays drums and percussion. You might think from the string-heavy lineup this would be a classically influenced CD, but it's heavily influenced by funk and blues. With flute sonically on top, it has a 70's Archie Shepp-influenced jazz feel, but the music is certainly modern. Similar to a lot of modern jazz discs, "Renegades" has some free jazz and some complicated intertwining lines, though not in the same song. Mitchell even sings a few lines on "By My Own Grace". The recording quality is very good - hearing the wood of the wooden instruments (including the drums) adds to the earthy qualities of the music. This is very good jazz, and if anything in the review sounds slightly interesting, you should consider picking this one up.

The first few notes of "Cause And Effect" will have you thinking you're back in the 1970's. You've got funky jazz with a flute taking the lead. Much like Rob Mazurek's "We Are All From Somewhere Else" (featuring Nicole Mitchell), the combination of a warm sound and flute gives a retro vibe. Ms. Mitchell heeds the lessons of the past to keep this CD quite good, though. This CD has three basic song types. Songs like "Cause And Effect" are funky instrumentals. The band gets a good groove, though it's never trite. There are good solo improvs and group improvs. "Sun Cycles" is one of the free songs. The pulse is weaker, and like many quieter free songs you have to turn it up and play close attention to get the most out it. Lastly, vocalist Ugochi Nwaogwugwu sings on three songs. "Love Has No Boundaries" is a duet with trumpeter David Young. Ugochi has a great voice, with a lot of range, and its contrasted with Young's bluesier voice. According to a DVD review, Nicole Mitchell is singing backup on the other two songs. The lyrics wouldn't be out of place in the 70's, adding to the retro feel of the CD.

Though it has a retro vibe, this CD should appeal to anyone who likes funky jazz. There are definitely modern elements, especially in Jeff Parker's guitar-playing. That, and high quality of the writing and playing ensure this CD is no simple exercise in nostalgia.
