Good book...best basketball movie since "Hoosiers". Haskins coached a team that will go down in history as a basketball team that fought through racism on and off the court. If you're young, it'll make you shake your head and wonder: Did this really happen? Can this be true? If you're old and gray, like me, it'll embarrass you. How could we let this happen? I was in college in 1965, a year prior to Texas Western's title run. I was at a small college in eastern Arizona. A few of the Texas Western players actually played at my small college. It was a triple-overtime game...I will never forget it. They had great players, including "Big Daddy" Lattin. How some of our players were treated off the court at restaurants and hotels was appalling. It continued into the 70s. I noticed it at the University of Arizona when Fred Snowden became head basketball coach in 1972.I recall a Wildcat basketball player scoring over 30 points one night and after the game was refused service at a restaurant. Read all the chapters in Haskin's book and see the movie over and over again. You'll be glad you did.
