 A History of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, Roosevelt Base & Reeves Field N.A.S. (Volume 1) $39.00 This book is a gem, a personal narrative that is also chock full of local history, Navy contract politics and policy, plus a large, hard core of "no bull" ship construction and maintenance. It follows the author's career, which spanned most of the life of the Shipyard, charting the ebb and flow of the yard's fortunes and the work they did on a bewildering variety of vessels. At the same time, the author manages to skillfully weave the work at Long Beach into the larger picture of an ever-changing US Navy, while dropping in small vignettes of the daily lives of the people involved. My only criticism is that the book does not have an index, which such detailed material really needs. Even without an index, this work is an unparalleled primary source for all sorts of readers, from serious researchers and historians and Navy personnel, to nautical/Navy buffs and locals whose lives were affected by the presence of the yard itself. Its rare for a true "hands on" person to write about not only what they did, but why they did it that way, and even rarer for them to do it in a form that is enjoyable to read, but Landgraff pulls it off. I hope he is working on a Second Edition, because answering the follow-up questions alone will require it.
