![]() Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths $6.99 I read this book for my sixth grade reading class, and liked it so much that I nabbed it. It's incredibly entertaining. The author makes the myths completely captivating. The price, though, is accuracy. He does take some liberties with the stories, and occasionally stops half way through--I think he did this with the myth of Eros and Psyche: he cut off at the bit where Eros flew away and the castle disappeared. No idea why, the next bit's the best. Anyway, it's a really wonderful introduction to Greek mythology, not dry in the least. I highly recommend it. If you do get it and end up interested, though, you really should pick up another book that's more complete and true to the original myths. ![]() World Mythology: An Anthology of Great Myths and Epics $37.81 The book was in very good shape looks like you didnt even use it much...love it...came on time too... ![]() Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes $7.99 A wonderful, summarized account of Greek and Roman mythology. Hamilton takes a more serious note than others just out to tell the stories, but fortunately never goes out on an intellectual limb to disect all meanings. Rather she handles the mythology professionally while still obviously revelling in the sheer awesomeness of these stories. She hits on as many myths as possible, including the works of Homer. The main focus is Greek, but she even manages to put in a summary of the Norse way of things (though I wouldn't recommend this book for studying that). One of my favorite aspects of this book is the "Family Trees" in the back. Excellent resource for studying as well as just a great read ![]() Classic Myths to Read Aloud: The Great Stories of Greek and Roman Mythology, Specially Arranged for Children Five and Up by an Educational Expert $13.95 This is a marvelous book! I wanted my granddaughters to learn Greek and Roman myths since there are so many references to the stories and the characters in day-to-day media. If they knew more about the tales, I thought they could appreciate the references to them. I first looked at the book to find out if the girls would like it and get anything out of it. As it turned out, I read it from cover to cover, and couldn't put it down. I had never had school or college classes in these subjects and I was mesmerized. The plots are summarized at the beginning, which makes the stories easier to understand for people who have no knowledge at all of them. Also at the beginning of each myth is the amount of time it will take to read it -- making bedtime story reading more predictable. And, there is also a pronunciation guide for the names and some of the words, with brief explanations or definitions. The stories themselves are fascinating, easy to read aloud, print on the pages is clear and not too small, and chapters are of reasonable length to tell a tale and maintain interest. After the end of each, there are short descriptions of words we use in modern times which originated from these myths and the language and culture of ancient times. These can be eye-openers, and have given my granddaughters and I opportunities for many discussions! This was planned as a learning book. And, it's been a great teacher -- for the reader as well as the listeners! |
