Monster Madness: Grave Danger
Monster Madness: Grave Danger

$39.99
I tried the demo of this game, and fell in love with it. I bought it for a great price (10 dollars plus shipping). It has a fun, classic feel to the game play, and even though it may be more "kiddie-centric", it really has some gameplay value for older players (I'm 35!). On top of that, it has 4 player simultaneous mode! Too many games nowadays are lacking this type of feature. For parents, it's a great game to play with the kids. And it has plenty of upgradeable stuff and little tidbits to keep adults interested too (see if you can pick out all of the old monster movie cliches ;) ).

This game is pretty good if you can find it for a good price. I got a great deal on mine. Don't expect anything amazing in terms of graphics or realism, as this is one of the earlier games for the Playstation3. The weapons are not great either really. However, it's still fun to play every once in a while. The concept is neat and it is challenging because it makes you think carefully about your every move and you must utilize the time control abilities with skill or else you'll get your butt kicked. The time control only lasts for a few seconds so that gets frustrating, but I guess it would be too easy if you could just freeze everything and walk around willy-nilly for however long you wanted. Only set the difficulty on "skilled" if you REALLY are skilled, as you can die rather quickly and there is not a lot of ammo. The online multiplayer game play can be fun for a while but it gets boring after some time. Multiplayer is more of a "set up" map with weapons laid out throughout it and you just pick them up and run around and shoot at other players. For time control there are special time grenades that you must hit the enemy with to freeze them and then shoot them with your firearm. You will probably have more fun playing the single player campaign mode and then for online just play other games like Killzone2 or Little Big Planet.

This book was interesting back in 2001, but today DirectPlay is deprecated, so 80% of this book is now no longer useful. That isn't saying much though: I doubt if any programming book written 8 years ago is still relevant! But still, it was an interesting read at the time and I would like to see a new edition covering Winsock2. There's like nothing in print on this subject today... I would like to find a book that covers hardcore Winsock2 and threading, and builds a rudimentary MMO concept game with a dedicated server that the reader can play around with, and use to build a few small persistent game projects.
