Two Words, One Answer.

 Skeletal Lamping $15.98 I liked like 2/3 of 3/5 of the songs on "Skeletal Lamping." If you do the math, that equals 2/5 of stars. Barnes still has his penchant of a pop hook, but pushes the boundaries a bit too far and his songs suffer for it. Tunes that start of promising or have spellbinding segments, often get brought down by zany-for-zany-sake's tempo changes, white noise, and/or absurd lyrics. The first track, "Nonpareil of Favor," is a perfect example of the schizophrenic nature of the tracks on this album. The ditty begins with Of Montreal in top form, which is as catchy as Jerry Rice. The song then shifts into about two other Abbey Road-esque sequences, which are also strong. But then at the 2:05 mark, inexplicably, a note blasts and then drones on with a ear-splitting, grating quality that damages the playability of the entire track. This being said, "An Eluardian Instance," is an amazing song that has spectacular use of trumpets and harmonies. But to me, Montral is Cook's best work! Track by track, it's solid and hangs together beautifully. The energy of the performance radiates throughout. I would recommend that newcomers start with Montral and then spin off into the various studio albums.
