Gunnery Sergeant Sally Drumm's anthology, "MILSPEAK: Warriors, Veterans, Family, and Friends Writing the Military Experience" is a magnificent piece of work.

As a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Storm I immediately recognized the multi-dimensional benefits this book offers to veterans and current active duty members and to their families. It also provides an insight for every American that has not been available until now - this anthology opens a window of reality into the military experience that allows for an understanding of the true character and selflessness exhibited by our military members and the stresses, dreams, and aspirations they and their families live with every day and throughout their lives.

The writers in MILSPEAK provide this truth through their stories and in sharing their experiences - this truth provides a stark contrast to the overdramatic and politically influenced television and Hollywood versions of America's military that are portrayed in our celebrity-centric culture.

There are obvious scholarly benefits in learning to write well, along with the simple joy it brings in telling a story, and the writers in this work have embraced this notion. I have served as an administrator, professor, and student veterans' advisor in the California Community College System for the past 15 years - we are seeing more and more veterans and their spouses on campus these days and everyone of them has a story to tell - in many cases a story that needs to be told because of the catharsis it brings in writing about it. Gunny Drumm's MILSPEAK is an inspirational example of this catharsis at work for every American veteran and non veteran alike to see that allows them to understand the reality of American military service in both shining and tarnished moments.

In hindsight I would have loved to have seen a book like MILSPEAK available when my fellow Vietnam veterans and I returned from our war. Maybe then we would have had a smaller number of ghosts to deal with over the past 40 years.
