There are films that most everybody agrees are great...Saving Private Ryan, Sunrise, The 400 Blows, The Seven Samurai, Rashomon and there are great films that strive to tell their stories in an unconventional manner and thus risk being dismissed as pretentious. Beau Travail and Last Days are two such films, both totally successful to my mind but both challenging to viewers accustomed to one mode of storytelling.

Last Days is something you have to be in the right mood for...quiet, contemplative, open to subtleties, it's not a Friday night popcorn flick. This movie would make a perfect double feature with Kubrick's The Shining as it's another story of a tormented soul trapped in too much space, in this case another large, cavernous, lonely, isolated house in which the main protagonist self-destructs. The cinematography and sound design is absolutely beautiful and subject matter wise we are back with the scruffy, pale boys and flat northern light (Van Sant trademarks). I'm not particularly into traditional drag, but must also say that Michael Pitt looks fabulous in a black dress.

If you are a highly extroverted person who doesn't need time to be by yourself then this film will probably never really gel completely for you...however if you are the sort who sometimes needs to escape things then the film is almost comically accurate in it's portrait of a guy trying to hide from everyone, including those who care about him most. There is definitely humor here, albeit of a black variety.

Last Days is up there with Mala Noche and My Own Private Idaho as one of the directors very best films and I can only imagine how this would look on blu-ray. Now that Chasing Amy is out, this would be among my top 5 most sought after Blu-ray titles, the others being Saving Private Ryan, L'Atalante, My Own Private Idaho and Mala Noche.

In an American film environment, this film I see is misunderstood easily. This is a tone poem and a human drama about inner conflict, desire, and true love. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweep of the movie, the sense of the historical era within which it is set, and the contemplative beauty of the music set within an intelligence I rarely find in American film. Perhaps this is a film for those interested in artistic expression, inner contemplation, and human relations. I really enjoyed this film.

I needed books for college and did not have very long to wait. I received my books ordered in a timely manner. I had never ordered anything online and was not sure about how secure this would be but it was totally worth. After I had compared prices with other ways to purchase I realized I found the best deal. I would not hesitate to order books or products this way again if I need anything.
