You can call it "Breakfast of Champions" or a basic Mexican dish; but once we get our nose out of the air and understand what it is, maybe we can try and help folks decide whether to buy this version or not. In fact, I'll betcha at least 75% of the folks reading this now know what menudo is or they wouldn't have stopped to read.

I'll let that 25% (generous figure, I imagine) look up "menudo" in Wikipedia or something. I think our job here is to relate this particular menudo to others. Is it worth their purchase price? Does it exceed comparable products?

I say, "yes." For me it's the best canned menudo I've tasted. Based on canned menudo I've tasted, it gets five stars; but to be honest, I haven't tasted them all. Plus, some homemade menudo might be even better than Juanita's. Keep in mind that some may be inferior to Juanita's, also. And let's face it, I wanted to counteract what I saw as a very misplaced and unfair rating and "review." This is menudo; and it is quite good menudo.

You can tell by my moniker that I live in southern Texas, on the Mexican border, in fact. I also lived in the Houston area for a bunch of years and in El Paso before that. I grew up in California. I've lived in Guatemala and traveled in Mexico. So, I'm familiar with menudo and know that it's a soup made basically of tripe and hominy The difference is in the seasonings and grease. There are different varieties; but this is the best known in the USA, so we'll concentrate on what we have.

Some menudo-- especially fresh -- can be very greasy. Personally, I like less grease and am happy with the proportion in Juanita's. Juantia's seasonings are excellent, and especially good for beginners -- not too hot.

My recommendation is that, if you know menudo, this is probably as good as it gets in a can. If you don't know menudo, this is a way to get a meaningful sampling.

But do understand that it's tripe, as was clearly and oh so cleverly stated, and you also can look up the meaning of tripe (Wikipedia will link you to it).

It's really a pretty basic ingredient in the foods of many cultures, not really a big deal or laughing matter. But if you can't stand the thought of tripe or hominy going through your lips, then what are you doing on this page? And don't travel south of the border or eat in a Mexican restaurant.

And for Heaven's sake, don't ridicule a neighboring culture through ignorance, please. Some of those folks you're ridiculing just may actually be your American neighbors.

Oh, one more tip? It's nice to squeeze in some lime and dump in a spoon of freshly chopped onion. Then you have a proper menudo.

That is when the Menudo came to Brazil and I was mesmorized when I saw Ricky Martin. My dad lift me up and Ricky Martin hughed me, signed my poster and gave me a kiss on my cheek. This is the earliest memories from my childhood!!!!! This were a great music for kids in the 80's.
