Two Words, One Answer.

 Scrooge $7.99 Collectors of different interpretations of "A Christmas Carol" should beware. If you already own the Seymour Hicks version (available as Scrooge or as part of A Christmas Carol (Ultimate Collector's Edition)(B/W & Color)), you don't want this. It is the same film. Why Hicks' name is omitted in the cast listing at the top of this page, I don't know. Tenderloin (1960 Original Broadway Cast) $11.98 If Fiorello LaGuardia cleaning up New York politics can work as a musical, why not Rev. Andrew Brock cleaning up the red light district? If non-singing serious actors Rex Harrison and Richard Burton can carry the leads in successful musicals, why not non-singing serious actor Maurice Evans? If "Little Tin Box" can musically portray political corruption, why not "How the Money Changes Hands"? Perhaps, the answer lies in an unsympathetic leading character and a cast who follow his lead in lackluster singing. Harnick and Brock were nowhere near their peak abilities in writing this music. Abbott and Weidman were nowhere near their peak abilities in writing this book. Put it all together and it spells F-L-O-P, which the musical did. The two best numbers, which are also the two best sung numbers, "Artificial Flowers" and "My Miss Mary," are not even part of the plot. They are just thrown in. If you want to listen to this with some degree of enjoyment, I recommend that you keep the story synopsis before you. Then, maybe you can make some sense out of it. Is it ironic that the original cast album on vinyl included a copy of the souvenir program as part of the package? Maybe they knew they wouldn't need them at the theater. |
