Wall Street: One Year Later, Indra Nooyi, Swine Flu, 100 Best Companies to Work For, Wine Buying for Vultures $6.75 "Lessons of the Crash of '08" tells readers that Wall Street hasn't really changed that much one year after Lehman Brothers failed - it is still operating on the principal of taking care of itself first, big customers second, everyone else last. Revisiting Lehman's fall, we're told it wasn't because regulators wanted to teach people a lesson, but that the Treasury had 'no authority' (Geithner) to put capital into Lehman, and 'the central bank did not have the ability to fill a capital hole' (there were no willing buyers). The result is renewed evidence that financial institutions need not worry about being allowed to fail, regardless of the enormous costs to taxpayers. The author also believes that the changes of reform (eg. breaking up some of the giant firms) are slim to none. "Is Anyone Going to Jail For This?" points out that the British once executed on of their admirals who lost an important battle to encourage others not to dare a repeat. At present, however, there has not been near that level of accountability for Wall Street' leaders. Why? They were just playing by the rules Wall Street helped write. Only two (Bear Stearns hedge fund managers) have been indicted. "The Capitalist Who Loves North Korea" tells of American businessman James Kim who this month is opening the first private university in North Korea, funded largely by evangelical Christians. It will have an international faculty (some unpaid, at first) eventually teaching about 600 graduate students various topics, including industrial management. Previously Kim built a 1,750 privately-funded student university in northeastern China (near North Korea) where he grew up after his father fled the Japanese occupation of Korea. Kim's prior business successes include a South Korea taxi company, and Pensacola wig, clothes, and women's shoe businesses. However, how he squares teaching economics and finance with North Korea's emphasis on self-reliance and worship of the Dear Leader remains to be seen. "How Pot Became Legal" reports that 13 states have laws allowing residents use of marijuana for medicinal purposes - typically to alleviate chronic pain (especially nerve pain caused by diabetes, AIDS and hepatitis), manage movement disorders such as multiple sclerosis, and as an anti-nausea agent for those undergoing chemotherapy. Another 15 states are considering following this direction. Until February of this year, the federal government treated state laws allowing medical marijuana as void, and backed by the Supreme Court, periodically conducted raids on those following these state laws. President Obama, this February declared that these raids would no longer occur. Doctors in California can approve marijuana for most anything and many do - there are 700 dispensaries and around 350,000 patients using them. Potted plants, and non-inhaled alternatives are also available. Nationally, 40% of the public supports making marijuana legal, up from 30% in the 1970s; in California the figure is 56%. A Harvard economist estimates that legalization of marijuana could bring in about $7 billion in added taxes and save $13.5 billion in prohibition costs. Meanwhile, California has been showing other states how a legitimized pot business could work. Unfortunately, the situation is now in total turmoil. On 10/08/09 the L.A. District Attorney announced that all medical marijuana dispensers in the county are acting illegally, per a 2008 state Supreme Court decision declaring over-the-counter sales of such are illegal. He promises to prosecute them all. Stay tuned. |
